REDEEM THE TIME

Colossians 4:5-6 (New King James Version)

Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

Time-wasters are everywhere.  They steal from our lives in ways that we don’t consider.  There are many kinds of time wasters, watching TV can be a time waster, as can doing things we normally consider “good things”.  We can waste time at work if our work is keeping us from going home to our children.  Being able to call a day “a day” is a vital ability.  We can classify anything as a time-waster if what we’re occupied with is keeping us from doing the most important thing.  Time wasters keep us from God, family, and serving others.

Worry can be a time-waster as can anger or bitterness.  The moments we spend in futile worry or anger are moments we can never retrieve and are moments that serve no purpose other than fill us with greater anxiety and pain.

The internet is a recent addition to time-wasters.  Time on the internet can accomplish much in our modern life.  But it can also create havoc in our schedules.  When we first had the internet in our home, Ronda told me that she started on the internet to find things for homeschooling, which she had just begun with our two eldest. In the old days of AOL dial-up you would ask your question and the computer would chug, chug, chug until it gathered the information.  It would prominently display how many answers there were to your question.  Ronda would read that there were 15,002 answers and she would start down the list as if she had time to look at every possible answer.

I think you get the idea.  We are bombarded with time-wasters in every sphere of our lives.  But in Christ we have freedom.  We have the freedom to choose to use our time as a precious gift, given by God.  We are given the opportunity to redeem the time.  This means that even when we have squandered this most precious gift, repentance and redirection, focusing on God’s truth allows us to redeem those wasted moments.

Let’s be about redeeming these moments for the glory of God!

Blessings,

Marty
