Am I a Good Steward

Jesus used an antiquated word to describe a Christian, “Steward”.  Although most households of His day had a steward if they were families of wealth and influence, we have apps and computers to help us keep track of our daily activities and responsibilities.  Kings often had stewards as close friends and confidantes.  A Steward was a person of rank and responsibility.

How are stewards like a Christian, you might ask?  If we look at the Old Testament, we can find some clues.  Joseph, as second in command, had a steward.  He used him in the distribution of grain and in teaching his brothers a lesson.

When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my home, and slaughter an animal and make ready; for these men will dine with me at noon.” Genesis 43:16

When they drew near to the steward of Joseph’s house, they talked with him at the door of the house, Genesis 43:19

And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack. Genesis 44:1

When they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, “Get up, follow the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good? Genesis 44:4

What sticks out to me is that you don’t hear the steward having a conversation with the master.  The master speaks and the steward responds.  You don’t read about the steward telling the master to wait until he finishes this or that task.  You read that the master speaks, and the steward immediately complies with the wishes of the master.

This gives us a clue about how the Heavenly Father expects us to respond to His wishes.  It also gives us a clue about the rampant disregard many Christians have to the Will of God today.  Our pastor told us the true story of an enlisted navy man who loved to listen to our pastor talk about the end times.  He was not a Christian by any stretch of the imagination.  However, when our pastor and his bible study friends would begin a conversation about the end times, that enlisted man was all ears and would join the conversation and ask questions.  After a while our pastor asked the enlisted man point blank, “why do you care about Jesus coming again? You are not a Christian are you?” The enilisted man replied, “oh no! But I need to know when it’s getting close so I can turn my life over to God.  I’m having too much fun to do it now, but I will when the time gets closer!”

I’m afraid this is the attitude of many people today.  We have a fascination of the end of time, but not so that we can tell others.  Rather, our fascination stems from a selfish attitude.  We want to know so we can gauge how much time we have left before we must surrender the reins of our lives to God.

The question is, where are you and I when it comes to being a steward?  The first thing we must do is become a Christian.  Becoming a Christian is not saying a prayer it’s not even being baptized.  Becoming a Christian is where a person recognizes their sin and their absolute inability to change their situation.  It begins with a person realizing that they are headed to Hell with no chance of redemption.  It continues with the realization given by God Himself that Jesus is the only way to gain freedom from sin, eternal death, and, as a result, eternal life.  Only after a person comes to this realization can they fully surrender their lives to God and accept the blood of Jesus as the only cleansing for sin and the hope for eternal life.  That transaction occurs through a simple prayer.

“Lord Jesus, I need you! Without You, I am truly lost and going to Hell! I have sinned against You and lived my own life. I repent, turn around, change direction, I surrender to You, and ask You to come into my heart.  Change and cleanse me! Make me your child.  I accept my new role as a child of God and steward of all You have given me.  Help me to live for you every day!”

When this happens, a person is changed from darkness to light, from death to life.  It is a spiritual transformation.  God leaves you here to learn how to become a good steward and servant.  This is essential for us to have a place in Heaven.

I hope this has been a blessing to you today,

Let me know if you prayed this prayer. martys@cedarfallsbaptistchurch.org
